Daughter Violet, bright and musical, suffered heartbreak when her husband abandoned her shortly after their wedding when he learned of her earlier brief marriage, which had already been annulled. On August 18, 1885, at the age of twenty two, Violet took her own life in her father’s study using his revolver. She left behind a note quoting Thomas Hood’s poem Bridge of Sighs. Other losses followed. Anna endured the deaths of several children and the passing of her husband Thomas in 1890. Eventually the family dispersed and the house stood abandoned for decades before later restoration.
