The Twisted Guide To The Paranormal, The Epworth Rectory Haunting Edition

Old Jeffrey, The Poltergeist Who Knocked, Answered, And Refused To Leave Epworth Rectory

In the quiet Lincolnshire village of Epworth, on the edge of the Isle of Axholme, stands an old rectory that once housed one of the most famous and best-documented hauntings in English history. Built in 1709 to replace an earlier house destroyed by fire, Epworth Rectory was home to the Rev. Samuel Wesley, his wife Susanna Wesley, and their large family of nineteen children, nine of whom survived to adulthood. Among them were the future founders of Methodism, John Wesley and Charles Wesley. Between December 1716 and January 1717, this ordinary clerical household became the unwilling stage for a series of disturbances so persistent and well-witnessed that they earned the affectionate nickname “Old Jeffrey” and helped shape the spiritual outlook of one of Christianity’s most influential movements.

The first signs appeared on the night of 2 December 1716. The family heard a series of loud knocks and groans that seemed to come from different parts of the house. At first they suspected rats or a practical joke, but the sounds quickly became more organised and deliberate. Heavy footsteps were heard ascending and descending the stairs when no one was there. Doors slammed violently without wind or human hand. A servant named Robert Brown was thrown to the floor by an invisible force while carrying a tray. The children’s beds were shaken so violently that they could not sleep.

The activity soon focused on the eldest daughter, Hetty, and spread to the rest of the household. The knocks would follow specific patterns, one for “yes,” two for “no,” and would answer questions put to the entity. It seemed particularly fond of the youngest children and would gently rock their cradles when they cried. On several occasions the entire family gathered in one room and listened as the disturbances moved around them, raps on the walls, the sound of a large animal dragging chains across the floor, and a peculiar gobbling noise like a turkey. The Rev. Samuel Wesley, initially skeptical and stern, eventually confronted the spirit, demanding it reveal itself or leave in the name of God. The response was a loud burst of knocking directly beneath his feet.

The disturbances lasted for roughly two months, with the most intense period occurring between Christmas and mid-January. The family kept meticulous notes, and several letters written by the Wesley children and Susanna herself survive, providing one of the clearest contemporary records of any poltergeist case in history. Susanna described the entity as “exceedingly noisy” but never physically harmful to the children. John Wesley, then thirteen years old, later wrote that the noises were so regular and intelligent that the family began to treat “Old Jeffrey” almost as an eccentric member of the household. They would speak to it, ask it questions, and even tease it when it became too rowdy.

The phenomena were witnessed by many people outside the immediate family. Servants, neighbours, and visiting clergy all heard the knocks and footsteps. On one memorable night, a group of men from the village stayed up with the family and heard the spirit respond to their questions with perfect timing. No one ever saw a full apparition, though several people reported seeing a shadowy shape or a white figure gliding through rooms. The most consistent description was of loud, rhythmic knocking that could be heard throughout the house and even from outside.

The activity gradually subsided after mid-January 1717. By February the noises had almost completely ceased, though occasional raps were reported for a few more weeks. The Wesley family never claimed the disturbances were demonic, Susanna believed it was the spirit of a deceased person seeking rest or justice, while John Wesley later reflected that the experience strengthened his belief in the reality of an unseen spiritual world.

The Epworth Rectory haunting stands out for several reasons. First, the quality of the witnesses, an educated clerical family with no motive to fabricate stories and everything to lose by attracting scandal. Second, the sheer volume of contemporary documentation, letters, diaries, and later accounts written by John Wesley himself. Third, the intelligent and interactive nature of the phenomena, the spirit responded to questions, showed preferences for certain family members, and never caused serious physical harm. Finally, its lasting influence, the strange events at Epworth helped shape the spiritual worldview of John and Charles Wesley, whose Methodist movement would transform British Christianity.

Skeptical explanations have been offered over the centuries. Some point to the possibility of pranks by the servants or the older children. Others suggest structural issues in the old house, settling timbers, rats in the walls, or wind moving through the chimneys, amplified by fear and expectation in a large, isolated household. A few modern researchers have proposed that the phenomena were a form of collective poltergeist activity focused on the adolescent children during a period of family stress, the Wesleys were financially strained and had recently lost several children. However, none of these theories fully account for the consistency and intelligence of the knocks or the fact that the activity continued under direct observation by multiple adults.

Today, the original Epworth Rectory no longer stands, it was replaced in the 19th century, but the site is still marked and visited by those interested in Methodist history and the paranormal. The story of Old Jeffrey remains one of the best-attested poltergeist cases of the 18th century, remarkable not for violence or terror, but for its strangely domestic and almost companionable quality.

In cases like Epworth, what stands out is not fear or aggression, but the way the unexplained became woven into everyday life. The presence responded intelligently, interacted with the family, and even showed what appeared to be preference and personality, turning something unknown into something almost familiar. Whether interpreted as a spirit, a psychological phenomenon, or something else entirely, the events reveal how people in deeply religious households understood and adapted to the unexplained. Rather than immediate terror, there was curiosity, routine, and even a kind of acceptance, showing how the boundary between the natural and the supernatural once felt far less rigid than it does today.
