When Jack and Janet Smurl moved into their West Pittston, Pennsylvania duplex in 1973, they were looking for a quiet place to raise their four daughters. What they got instead was nearly 15 years of terror, torment, and something unseen that wanted them broken, or worse, dead.

At first, the activity was mild, strange odors, footsteps in empty rooms, a cold spot that never went away. But the darkness inside the home grew bolder, louder, more violent. Appliances burst into flames without warning. The family dog was thrown into a wall. Deep scratches appeared on walls, and on people.

Jack Smurl reported being sexually assaulted by a demonic entity. Janet was levitated and slammed into the ceiling. Their daughters were tormented by phantom voices whispering obscenities. Even visiting guests were attacked. Something wanted the Smurls to suffer, and it was tireless.

The haunting was so intense that the family reached out to famed demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (yes, the same investigators from The Conjuring). The Warrens claimed the Smurl house was infested by a powerful, malevolent demon, and after multiple investigations, they arranged for an exorcism.

But the terror didn’t end overnight. Several exorcisms failed. The family lived in fear for years, with no privacy, no peace, and a media frenzy outside their door. Eventually, after a final Church-sanctioned exorcism, the haunting faded. But some say the entity wasn’t destroyed, only dormant.
